How big is a goalpost in football?

2 min read

The size of a football goal depends on the level at which training takes place and whether you are looking for a football goal in front of the club or at home in the garden.

A football field for young players is much smaller, especially where they still play 7-on-7. There are also different sizes of goalposts when it comes to professional or amateur football.

If you are looking for sport with goalposts and want to buy goalposts, then continue reading this blog post.

Soccer goalpost for kids

The KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) adjusted the dimensions of football fields and goals in 2017 because, after research, it turned out that the current fields and goals were too large at the time.

This would have a negative effect on the children’s enjoyment of football. Of course, we don’t want that!

Fortunately, that has changed. Below we list the dimensions of football goals and fields for children:

  • The very youngest players – the under 6 trainees – play two against two on a 20x15m field with 3x1m goals.
  • The under-7 trainees play four against four on a field of 30x20m, with goals of 3x1m.
  • The Under 8, 9, and 10 trainees play six against six on a playing field of 42.5x30m with goals of 5x2m.
  • Youth players under 11 and 12 play 8 against 8 on a field of 64×42.5m with goals of 5x2m.

Big football goalposts

If an association plays 11 against 11 on the field, requirements from the KNVB must also be met.

The KNVB has drawn up rules to keep the sport as safe and fun as possible. On a field where football is played 11 against 11, the inside dimensions of the goalposts must be 7.32m x 2.44m x 1.50m.

Professional soccer goalposts

Even with a professional football goal, the KNVB has set clear requirements for both the football field and the goals.

For example, the main field at football clubs must comply with a size of 105 x 69 m. Or 105 x 68m at the international level.

However, the goal never changes. A football goal is also 7.32m x 2.44m. A professional football goal meets the dimensions and safety requirements set by the KNVB.

The professional football goal can be used by paid football clubs (BVOs), but SKOR football goals are also suitable for the football club around the corner. Or even in your backyard!

Except for soccer, many other sports use goalposts to record scores. If you are interested, Stuart Bloom has a good article about sports with goalposts at ascoring.com. It would be best if you visited the sports category to learn more about sports with goalposts
